How do I prepare for a massage?

A massage does not require special preparation, although taking a nice warm shower or a soak in a bath before you come to us is a great way to start. There is no shower facility at ‘A Touch of Dutch’, but hygiene is highly appreciated.

Can I eat or drink before a massage?

You can eat something light if you like, but don’t eat a heavy meal, let’s say within two hours prior to your massage. We do not massage drunk or intoxicated persons. After your massage it is very important to drink lots of water.

What is included in a full body massage?

A full body massage normally includes work on your back, shoulders, neck, arms, hands, legs, feet, abdomen and head. Your chest (male) is included as well. If you do or do not want a specific part massaged, you can indicate this at your massage session. We provide relaxation, deep tissue and sports massages. All three are full body massages.

Do I have to be completely undressed?

For a full body massage, most people get completely undressed. You undress to the level you feel comfortable. We have big soft towels available for your comfort, some prefer to be uncovered. If you use a towel, your therapist will uncover only the body part being worked on and he will work around the clothes if you left some on.
Naked is fine as well, both the room and the table are warm and even the massage itself will warm you up. In case you get cold during the session, you still may ask your therapist to cover you.

Can I talk during my session?

Sure, if you’d like to talk, go ahead. The important thing to remember is that this treatment is all about you relaxing and enjoying the experience. It is fine as well if you don’t talk. During the first part of your massage you will have your head in a cradle, so speaking is more difficult. There are reasons however when you need to speak up: if your therapist does anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, you should let him know immediately. If he is applying too little or too much pressure, if you get too warm or too cold, if the room is too bright or too dark, or if anything is not working for you – speak up!

What about music during the massage?

We offer a wide range of music for relaxation. Any music you like to listen to can be played during your massage session. Studies have shown that music at under 60 beats per minute has a calming, relaxing effect on the body and therefore can enhance your experience. Our music selections are specially compiled for the purpose of your pleasure. Check out our music selection. All our playlists consist of music to relax and we are happy to advise you in finding the playlist that suits you most. While booking your appointment you can indicate which playlist you would like to hear during your massage.

I have medical issues. Can I still have a massage?

Please check our list of contraindications first in order to see if massage is possible for you. It is very important to list all health concerns and medications so your therapist can adapt the session to your specific needs without doing any harm. It is also important to list any allergies. Please write them down under ‘remarks’ in the appointment form. If you have doubts about your medical situation and having a massage, please contact your GP first.

What if I’m overweight or embarressed about my body?

We have seen bodies in every imaginable shape and size, from young to old, and we’re not there trying to judge your physique or ogle your body. As professionals who have found massage to be a wonderful gift to give, regardless of age and weight, we are proud of what we can offer to people in need of help or just wanting to luxuriate in the sense of touch.

What if I got an erection during my massage?

Sometimes it happens. Yet, some men avoid massage for fear this will happen to them. Or, they get a massage but are unable to relax because of this fear. But there is no reason to be embarrassed. Touch administered to any part of the body can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which can result in a partial or complete erection. Your therapist understands this and it won’t be an issue for him.

How will I feel after the massage?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days.

What time should I arrive at my appointment?

10 to 5 minutes prior to your massage is fine. Your masseur will shortly explain how things work, he shows you the room and asks you some questions about your health and your expectations for the massage. Note: If you arrive late, your session may be shortened without refund.

Can I book a massage before 10 am or after 9.30 pm?

Sure. If we are available at 10 am, you can ask for a earlier start of the session. If we are available at 9.30 pm, a 60 minute massage can always start at 10 pm. And sometimes we can make an exception. Just mention your desired starting time under ‘remarks’ and we send you a confirmation or we let you know the (im)possibilities.

Where will the massage take place?

Your massage will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. You will lie on a massage table especially designed for your comfort. It is possible to have music played and your masseur light a scented candle for your pleasure. Visit our photo gallery to see what our practice looks like. And don’t forget to switch off your mobile phone. A Touch of Dutch is located on the fourteenth floor of ‘De Calypso’ in the city center close to the central railway station in Rotterdam.

Do you also provide outcall massages?

We do not provide outcall massages, because we cannot guarantee the cosy warm atmosphere of our practice and we do not have the facilities to move our equipment around.

Do you offer duo-massages?

Our massage room is too small to put up two tables. Therefore we can only offer a massage to one person at the time provided by one therapist (no four-hand massages).

We are a couple and we both like to book a massage. Do you have a waiting room in your practice?

In our practice we don’t have a waiting room, but downstairs in the building there are some waiting corners where you can wait for your turn. Further we do have a ‘Bagels and Beans‘ in our building (entrance around the corner) where you can have a coffee, read a paper and have free wifi access. Or if the weather allows take a stroll through the beautiful city center of Rotterdam. Or visit the famous Market hall while you wait.

What about my privacy?

Your email address will only be used to send you an appointment confirmation with additional information about f.e. the location. We do not send anything else. Medical issues that may be important for your massage need to be discussed prior to the massage session, but won’t be registered. See also contraindications. Details concerning the massages at A Touch of Dutch always remain confident.

I would like to call you, but I don’t see any telephone number?

We are a small practice and we do not want our massage sessions being disturbed by ringing phones. You can send your phone number by email, and we will call you as soon as we can. If you do not have a Dutch number (+31), we will contact you by email only. Appointment requests are only taken via the appointment form on the website, never by telephone.
